ixup student artist to perform for Bandersnatch tonight
Mike Posner anticipates a crowd that will be rocking out in the Schine Underground when he comes to perform at Syracuse University Wednesday.
The 21-year-old Duke University senior spends his weekdays studying and attending classes, and his weekends touring the country and working on his mixtape and album.
‘He definitely is starting to become really popular,’ said Jimmy Sullivan, senior marketing and finance major. ‘It’s almost like Asher Roth because everything is spread through word of mouth. My friends and I started to listen to him, and then we started to put him on at parties. I feel like kids are saying, ‘Wow, I relate to this guy. He goes to college and parties just like me.”
Rapper Chuckledhead, who recently performed at Sigma Chi fraternity’s Derby Days, will open the show.
University Union is sponsoring Posner’s performance, as part of the Bandersnatch concert series, one day before his second mixtape, ‘One Foot Out the Door,’ becomes available for free on iTunes Thursday. ‘It’s super awesome,’ Posner said. ‘It’s so much better than my old one.’
Posner recently signed on J Records, a division of Sony, and is continually gaining publicity and popularity. ‘I think that Posner’s ticket sales will compare to Wale’s last semester, who was also part of the Bandersnatch series,’ said Kyra Zeller, UU Bandersnatch president and a junior in the Bandier Program for Music and the Entertainment Industry.
As of last night, 205 tickets were sold out of the 350 available. Zeller said students usually procrastinate buying tickets until the day of the show and up until showtime. Zeller attended Posner’s show last weekend in New York City.
‘The crowd was really into the music and it was packed, but at SU it’s harder to sell a show,’ she said. ‘While Posner is a rising star, he might not have the attention of the whole Syracuse campus.’
Though Posner may be unknown to much of the SU campus, many students are excited for his performance. Sarah Fleisher, a freshman public relations major, said she is excited to attend the performance. ‘A really good friend of mine goes to Duke, so right in the beginning of school he told me to check Posner out,’ Fleisher said. ‘When I found out he was coming to Syracuse, I was really psyched. I’m really pumped for the show and have been for a while.’ Tickets can still be purchased throughout the day and will be available until the show begins or until they sell out.
Fleisher thinks SU students will like Posner because his music appeals to a wide variety of people. She personally doesn’t like hip-hop music but loves Posner, a hip-hop artist. ‘I’ve seen some videos of his live performances on YouTube and it looks like he puts on a good show,’ she said. ‘I told all my friends about him and I’m really excited to see him perform.’
