Syracuse men’s basketball assistant coach Troy Weaver is flying to New York City this afternoon at 1:30. Billy Edelin will have to wait until today to see if he’s going, too.

The NCAA, after several days of delay, will make a decision this morning on whether the Syracuse point guard will face a suspension for participating in a recreation league last season. Weaver said that, should Edelin be suspended, he doesn’t think the freshman can attend the season opener tonight at Madison Square Garden against Memphis.

“(The suspension) could be 12 games. It could be zero,” said Weaver, who temporarily remained in Syracuse so he could be with Edelin when a decision is handed down via conference call. “I really don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Even if Edelin is not suspended, Weaver said it’s likely Gerry McNamara will start at point guard. McNamara, who also plays shooting guard, started SU’s first exhibition game last Tuesday and scored five points in 28 minutes.

“At this point, Billy just has to stay positive,” Weaver said. “There’s nothing else he can do.”
